Liane has four children, two children with SEN, one with ADHD and SPD and one with ADHD and Dyslexia, she is qualifed to Level 6 in British Sign Language and is a qualified Communication Support Worker (Learning Support for d/Deaf students) and has also worked as a Learning Support Assistant with students with ASC and other learning disabilities.
Liane says "We initially set up S.H.I.N.E because we discovered that once young people with SEN and disabilities left the education system they seemed to 'fall off the radar', we wanted to set up the organisation to bridge the gap between education and entering the world of work, many of these young people and adults possess many great skills and qualities, but are not given the opportunity to show them because many struggle with social communication, so they fall at the first hurdle of the interview process, we want to change that".
David has two children, one with Aspergers who has been through the education system. He has over 10 years experience of working with children and adults with SEN and Austim through running football coaching sessions for them.
David says "Through my football coaching I was astounded to find that when these young people became of college age they were basically left to their own devices and given limited information and support on finding any form of work that they actually wanted to do or had acheived a qualification in. After months of research I realised this was not an isolated incident and figures show that only 2 in 10 have any form of work experience or employment, mainly on a part-time basis and those that are in employment or work experience are pushed into unpaid or voluntary work, I realsied then something needed to be done and we at S.H.I.N,E make every effort to get these incredible young people into careers that they actually want to do, helping to take away the stress of interviews and CV writing and supporting them to show their ability in their work experience placements that they have chosen".
